International Green Computing Conference

January 11th, 2011

In 2010, Chicago was home to the first annual International Green Computing Conference. The event was such a success that it’s returning for its second go-round in July 2011. If you’ve made a resolution to go green in 2011, either through your business or individually, then you need to make it a point to add this event to your calendar.Multiple aspects of sustainable computing were covered in the conference’s research papers last year. Subjects included frameworks for managing data centers and energy-efficient equipment. Several presentations touched on varying CPUs’ frequencies and voltages based on their workload. This allows for more efficient energy consumption and consistent performance. The first edition of the conference also boasted three workshops, focusing on data center power management, architecture design for low-power systems, and presentation of works in progress. The 2011 conference will move from Chicago to Orlando, Florida at Disneyworld’s Holiday Inn. The three-day event will take place July 25-28. Papers are being accepted until March 18. Selected papers may be included in the Sustainable Computing journal, published by Elsevier. As with the first conference, the event will be sponsored in part by IEEE Computer Society. Known as “the world’s leading membership organization for computing professionals,” the Society was founded in 1946 and is still the largest society of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. Along with the conference, the society is known for its publications, Build Your Career career development site, and its online e-Learning Campus. The conference is also sponsored by the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Washington State University as well as the University of Texas at Arlington. WSU’s EECS school is well known in the field, and is ranked 68th among almost 180 PhD Electrical Engineering programs in the country. The faculty includes a member from the National Academy of Engineering (Anjan Bose), along with other illustrious members. The success of the conference and its plans for the future is a great sign that sustainable computing is on the rise. Hopefully the event will only increase in popularity, setting the stage for many conferences to come.
